Using Brain Research, Flannel Boards, & Storytime Props To Help Children Build Early Literacy Skills (3 Hr)
Using Brain Research, Flannel Boards, & Storytime Props to Help Children Build Early Literacy Skills (A 3 hour webinar in two parts)
The first half of this fast-paced, 3- hour, hands-on workshop introduces brain development and its relationship with early literacy in the earliest years. Practical examples show how to implement this knowledge into activities that build children’s early literacy skills and enhance parenting. An examination of flannel boards in library programming demonstrates how felt pieces can be used as visual representations for songs and rhymes, telling stories, playing games, and sharing tips with parents during in-person and virtual storytimes.
The importance of learning through play and hands-on experiences is the basis of the second half of the workshop. A quick tutorial about developmental tips shows how they can be easily created following a 1,2,3 formula and then used in programs. Summaries of studies showing the benefits of using colored scarves and musical instruments with young children are paired with activities that can be easily adapted for in-person or virtual storytimes.
Participants are expected to join in the activities and are requested to bring a colored scarf (or piece of fabric or dish towel), a small percussion instrument (shaker or bell).
